Skin Care and Make Up

Do you realize how many chemicals that women slather on to their face and body EVERY SINGLE DAY???

Most skin care products are full of toxins, which may be absorbed into your body. This industry is highly unregulated, which I find kinda funny, because there are a lot of rules for me as a small business soap maker!

Realize that no matter what the label says, check the ingredients to see what’s in the product.

Many of these synthetic chemicals are skin irritants, skin penetrators, endocrine disruptors and known carcinogens. NONONE needs these.

Fragrance: As mentioned earlier, manufactures of fragrances don’t have to list ingredients! That’s a little scary.  Most of the fragrances aren’t even needed to assist with cleaning, they’re just for scent. Which, I get! I enjoy good smells too! I just need a natural way instead of synthetic.

According to the Environmental Working Group (EWG), fragrances are counted in the top five allergens and can trigger asthma attacks. They have also revealed that 75% of fragrances contain phthalates which have been linked to diabetes, obesity, and hormone disruption (affecting both development and fertility.) Even natural fragrances or essential oils in detergents may be processed with harmful solvents because it is less expensive than distillation.

Phthalates: Dibutyl Phthalate is commonly found in cosmetics, personal care products, nail polish. Diethyl Phthalate is found in perfumes and lotions. Dimethyl Phthalate is in hair spray.  These are well known endocrine disruptors and have been linked to increased risk of breast cancer, early breast development in girls and reproductive birth defects in males and females. To make all this worse, it’s not disclosed on every product or it’s added to fragrances, which, remember, not ingredient requirements for fragrance. They can be found in deodorants, perfumes/colognes, hair spray and moisturizers.

Triclosan: Antimicrobial chemical that’s a well known endocrine disruptor. Studies show there are concerns that triclosan contributes to making bacteria antibiotic resistant. Can be found in anti-bacterial soaps, deodorants and toothpastes.

Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS)/ Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES):  A surfactant which is unfortunately in 90% of personal care and cleaning products. SLS’s are a skin, lung and eye irritant. Combined with other chemicals can lead to more serious issues like kidney and respiratory damage.

SLS’s are found in shampoo, body wash/cleanser, mascara and acne treatment.

Being a soap maker, I am familiar with SLS. I see its use in many Facebook soap making groups, used in bath bombs, bubble bars, etc. AGAIN, pay attention to ingredients or just find a trusted source.

Formaldehyde: A preservative. As if you didn’t know, but did you realize that it’s in cosmetics to prevent bacteria growth? This chemical was deemed as a human carcinogen by THE INTERNATIONAL AGENCY FOR RESEARCH ON CARCINOGENS (IARC) and has been linked to occupational related cancers: nasal and nasopharyngeal. It’s found in nail polish, shampoo, conditioner, body wash, cleanser, cosmetics.

While it’s impossible to avoid every single chemical, you can avoid a lot less since you are aware. Using the app, called Think Dirty, helps you to make better choices when purchasing products.  App-Think-Dirty-iPhone-1

The products that Young Living offers are free from harmful chemicals found in so many products found in stores. They are all-natural ingredients with the ancient beauty secrets found in essential oils used for centuries!! I find that to be super incredible!
